A hepatic panel (also known as a liver panel) is a blood test used to assess the health and function of your liver. It measures various enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver, helping to detect liver damage, disease, or dysfunction.
Components Typically Measured in a Hepatic Panel:
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT): An enzyme found primarily in the liver. Elevated ALT levels may indicate liver damage or disease.
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): Another enzyme found in the liver (and other organs). Like ALT, high levels of AST can signal liver damage, though it may also be elevated in muscle or heart conditions.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): An enzyme that can be elevated when there's bile duct obstruction or liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis.
Total Bilirubin: Bilirubin is a byproduct of the breakdown of red blood cells, and its levels can increase if the liver isn't processing it effectively, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
Albumin: A protein made by the liver that helps maintain blood volume and pressure. Low levels can suggest liver disease, kidney disease, or malnutrition.
Total Protein: Measures the total amount of protein in the blood, including albumin and globulins. Abnormal levels can point to liver problems or other conditions like malnutrition or kidney disease.
Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT): An enzyme that can indicate liver or bile duct problems, including alcohol-related liver damage or bile duct blockages.
